GENERAL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS
There are many reasons to perform background investigations on an individual. One of these is premarital checks, which answer questions such as:
1. Has the person been married before, and if so, is that person paying child support?
2. What does he/she actually do for a living?
3. Has the individual ever been in prison, or have a history of any type of abuse or violence?
4. Have they ever been treated for any type of addiction?
Other reasons for general background investigations include:
1. People interested in entering into business or a contract with another
2. Lawyers who may be checking on business contracting with their clients
3. Legal Research, i.e., property research, liens, judgments, divorce, marriage, etc.
4. Nanny Checks - know who is caring for your children.
Progress Energy, a large power supply company who owns three power plants on the east coast of Florida and several others in North and South Carolina, recently was paid a visit by U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. The Immigration Department found that three employees working at the company's Nuclear Facility located in Crystal River, Florida, one of which was found sweeping the floor in the Control Room of the facility, with fake Social Security Numbers in his possession. They had simply made up the numbers and applied for the job. The scary part is that they were hired and put to work in a nuclear facility without any background check at all. Do you think Progress Energy was embarassed? I think so. They have now changed their hiring practices. Another story was that F.E.M.A. (Federal Emergency Management Agency) was discovered through a south Florida newspaper to have at least thirty criminals taking information from Florida storm victims for aid. The thirty had been convicted of drugs, robbery, burlgary and even had a murderer among their numbers. Think F.E.M.A. changed their attitudes about checking employees? They did and rather quickly too.
A History of the Public Records System
The Public
Records System came with our forefathers and was used to notify interested parties that someone or something had legal dealings with another. It was noticed to the world that a person owned a piece of property and had bundled rights to that property. Claims were "staked" in the county office in gold rush days with property being deeded today in much the same manner.
Today one reord or file on the public record not only deeds but notice of legal actions, name changes, civil judgments, mortgages, all manner of lawsuits, as well as any legal notice or filing against anyone or anything. The public record keeps track of taxes owed, the probate of wills, utility liens, rights of way, and anything else that has a legal standing. As you can see, the Public Record is far reaching and permeates our lives.
Large database companies now provide access to these records with the majority of the records now available on the Internet. Public Record Information also includes a person's criminal history, driving history and general demographic information used by screening companies to help their clients hire the very best people. It is with this use that Altech Data Service came into being and continues to prosper utilizing a large range of the Public Records System.
